Ubuntu Linux?
I’ve been using Ubuntu for the past 4 days, I haven’t opened up Windoze XP since then.. I’m having a blast, nearly everything is operational now, took some tweaking. Anyone out there like Ubuntu????
Linux-vertical bars on screen, fine in Windoze?
When I boot up into Debian Linux, the booting is fine until it changes resolution (to another text resolution, before the booting is complete) and on this second resolution, the screen is completely black, and the monitor turns off. I get the same thing in consoles (F1-F6) now. When X starts, there are many vertical bars down the screen (perhaps 80 or more) which change colour when the screen is refreshed (move the mouse, etc.) and the screen as a whole flickers random colours frequently.
The xorg.conf in /etc/X11/ hasn’t been modified recently, either by myself or a program. The last thing I was doing was playing Heroes 3, then quitting, then restarting (no video problems)
I booted into Windoze, then restarted, then booted into Linux, and the problem was there. It’s strange though, because I haven’t been tinkering with the video for a long time. I double-checked that it wasn’t the card or the monitor, Windoze displays normally.

Thanks for the help. Yes, the computer’s video had been working fine (and still is under WXP) until just today. I can ssh to it from another computer (the one I’m using now) to poke around and do stuff, or XDMCP in for X stuff, but I have no idea what’s wrong.
***UPDATE: SOLVED***
I did an aptitude upgrade (debian has this auto updating feature)– it failed for most of the downloads (503 Service Unavailable), then I shut it down for the night. Next morning, it was fine.
I’m still utterly confused, and a little scared.
Perhaps the upgrade did something, or fixed up something (it said it would upgrade the kernel?..)
Anyway, sorry if this is no help to others with the same problem.
Is there anyway I can use the windoze bootloader to load linux?
I have an HP and it has a ‘special’ partition for recovering the OS. I would wipe all windoze BS but my fiance would be pissed. I tried installing Fedora Core 4 but the bootloader made my system think that all had been lost and began recovery every time I attempted to load windoze.
Lilo is not used in Fedora Core 4, I miss lilo. They use someother prorgram, I think it starts with a G.
