Ubuntu Demo #2
Multi-boot Pc with Windows Vista & Ubuntu 9.4. This video When it comes to an OS (operating system) Linux owns windows outside of the online gaming like wow, shaiya, etc. Linux has no need for an antivirus because its not poorly designed like windows is. To make windows as secure as linux, they would have to scrap the whole os and start from scratch. You can also try linuxmint its more customized but based on Ubuntu.
What linux distro should i use?
Hi my grandparents are giving me a older computer.(I think it came out in 03 or 04.) Its an hp and i’m putting linux on it. It runs sorta slow at the moment but im clearing the hard drive which i’m assuming will speed it up a lot. I’m having trouble choosing what distro to use. I don’t want a mini distro and don’t want ubuntu. I am good with computers. I have watched videos of systems on youtube and like free bsd (unix based so im including it. Sorta looks complicated but i don’t know??) I only have one cd to burn at the moment. Anyways i want a fairly powerful system, that i won’t have problems with it picking up wireless or any other hardware for that matter. Some distros i like are Sabayon, Fedora, Mandriva, Open SuSE, and as stated before, Free bsd. Oh yeah and i’m probably running a 32 bit system, and want a distro with a good community and that is not that complicated. Also with a good size community that knows what they are doing.
Thanks -

i looked at fedora and like it i guesse but still don’t want ubuntu so yeh not skipping to any previous versions any opinions on it or mabey bsd

How can I use Perl’s Copy package to preserve timestamps of the original file to be copied?
I’m using openSuse Linux with the standard Perl packages. I need to use Perl’s copy rather than UNIX’s “cp -p” because I need the error checking.
Is there a good “stepping” order for Unix Like Distros?
I’ve been a computer science unit since before I developed an addiction to caffeine and in doing so, I found it somewhat “necessary” to start using unix-like operating systems.
I’ve been an avid user of the newbie versions of linux over the years, PCLinux2008, OpenSuSe, Ubuntu, and some others; however, I really don’t feel like I’ve learned enough.
Recently, I tried installing the newest version of debian and had to fix/compile almost everything. My sound card didn’t work (download driver->recompile alsa and oss), my video card wasn’t able to use 3d redering engines (download video card driver, compile, modify xorg.config), wireless card didn’t work (download open source driver, compile, modprobe), even my freaking ethernet card didn’t work (this one was a real pain in the *** because I had to download two different firmware versions before it would work). Anyway, I ended up just saying screw it; because even though I had the system fully running, it took me about 20 hours to get it where I would be able to use it for work and class, and I wasn’t willing to do it all again if I downloaded some type of virus or ran a bad script, or something.
Long story short, I was wondering if there was some good stepping stone lineup for unix-like distros. Notice I said UNIX-LIKE, they don’t all have to be linux. Please actually give a REASON why you would recommend a particular path…
