Hey, I’m a Windows user. I use Windows XP, and I’m pretty good with computers, but I don’t know ALOT of technical shit. I recently re-formatted and removed Windows and installed the Mandriva Linux distro. So far (about a month) I fucking hate it!!! But anyway, I hate Windows, too, even though I really love it’s availability and user-friendliness and overall simplicity. So, I’m thinking of what I should do, and I remember Macs! Now, I have heard so much about Mac and Macbooks (Typical Mac User???) I have heard that it’s wonderful and high quality, and that it’s near impossible to break, and I’ve heard that OS X is the best thing to ever exist. Then from someone else, I hear that they’re gimmicky and glitchy, that OS X makes no sense and is terribly buggy, that tech support is rare and expensive, that they’re incredibly low quality and fragile, and that Windows is much better. I have heard alot of things about Windows users bashing it, there being no right-click thingy, and that you can’t get viruses, malware, etc. But then I’ve also heard that you CAN get viruses, that they DO have right-click…So. I kind of erased Windows by accident while I was dual-booting XP and Mandriva Linux, so my warranty is void and I now hate Linux ’cause it’s SO FUCKING CONFUSING…imho…sorry…and I don’t have Windows or want to go back to it. I’m fourteen years old, and my parents promised me a laptop during the summer between eighth grade and highschool. I’ve never had a laptop but I’ve always wanted one, and I only got my first computer this past Christmas. I’m very excited, and with my saved up money I can provide enough money so me and my parents can split the price of that white $999.00 Aluminum Unibody Macbook, which hopefully has the superdrive and good RAM and memory. But that will be all of my money, and it’s my first laptop. This is a really big descision. Please tell me EVERYTHING, INCREDIBLY DETAILED, about EVERYTHING!!!! Default browser, security features, programs and applications, Windows equivalents of applications, mobility, weight, looks (they look badass and ultra-awesome but I’ve heard of a “yellowing” problem with the white ones), just everything. Please. About Mac, Apple itself, the actual $999.00 Macbook, extra features, price, and if they’re worth it; and about OS X, too. Thanks, much obliged!

I installed Mandriva on my other laptop (for non-dual boot). I was switching from openSUSE. I got to the whole restart phase but when my computer restarted, the graphics started looking very jagged and faded and eventually, before getting to any significant screen, my screen turns into a faded light blue-green screen with nothing on it. My computer stays like that. My first instinct (i’m a linux newbie) was to panic and force the computer to be turned off by holding the on/off button. Once I tried to turn it on again, not even the BIOS screen appears. THe screens starts out all black then turns into the light-blue green screen. At no point do I see any sort of text. Pressing any key buttons (such as Delete, f8, etc) that BIOSes recognize the computer just makes beeping sounds but still nothing on the screen. I don’t know what to do. Please help!!!

The laptop is an HP Pentium 4, 3 ghz, 1GB of RAM, Ati video card *I forget the model*.

hey , i brought the mandriva linux premuim pack , and everytime i install, when i finnish , and after restarting , only the cursor appears ( can move it ) and a black background.

more details : i have a nVidea 1GB vga , 2 GB Ram and 500 GB HD ,
am connecting 2 monitors to it , but only 1 of them showing the screen .

i stress upon, me opting for the free-downloadable version of mandriva linux 2009 from its official site. does the one available in the ‘store’ serve better than the free-downloadable version ?
