I’m officially putting Windows in the trash and installing a Linux distribution. I’m having a hard time deciding which distribution to install. So which one is better, Ubuntu 9.04 or Mandriva 2009 Spring.

That is unique and not like Ubuntu, Fedora, OpenSUSE, etc.

my notebook were able to run windows xp just fine until I tried to install debian(linux distribution) from the cd-rom boot installation. From there I clean my secondary partition and then i change the format from ntfs to ext2. As I don’t actually know what I was doing, I abort the installation. After that, I start to get the ‘error loading operating system’ message and what’s more, I were not able to boot from cd-rom anymore…

Ubuntu is a free and open source Linux distribution. It has been awarded as being the most user friendly Linux distribution, and it arguably has the most functionality and beauty of all desktop Linux distros. What would be the economic and social benefits to the individual and society? Would there be any disadvantages to its adoption?

Obviously (without Win4Lin or Wine or something along those lines) I can only run linux files. However, if a program is made for, let us say, Debian or Suse will it run on another linux distribution? Or are they very specific?

I have used Suse (as well as a few comand prompt only Linux-OS[not usre if I'm even using the correct words here]) but nothing extensive. So treat me like an idiot, please.
