looking for the appropriate Linux?
hi
I am looking for a linux to install.
I guess I prefer Gnome as desktop.
I am a beginner in linux.
I want it to be really stable and safe. And so as few bugs as possible.
I DON’t want it for gaming but mostly for running various programs, website building and also I plan to start to learn programming a bit etc.
I prefer one with which I can learn a lot of things about how computers work.
As candidates I have Slackware and Debian in mind.
Please if you can help me tell me your opinion.
thanks

If you want one you’ll learn alot from, try Arch Linux. Depending on how you view it, it can be a huge headache or a fun challenge : )
If you’re not ready for that intense of an experience, then Ubuntu 9.04 could be a good choice (I personally don’t like the direction that they’ve gone with 9.10)
I’ve never used Slackware or know anyone who does, but my main reason for not having tried it is b/c the package manager doesn’t automatically handle dependencies.
As for Debian, I’ve never had much luck with it, but I’ve got friends that swear by it.
Good luck : )

If you are a linux newby, you might find Slackware and Debian a little difficult. These OS’s (Operating Systems) are more for experienced users such as program writers. I think to start out you should try a nice light system such as Linux Mint. If you want a little more sophisticated system Ubuntu 9.04 is an excellent system. These can be downloaded to a CD and easily installed absolutely free. Simply google either one. If you have a computer that can read DVD’s then you could try Ultimate Edition take your pick of which edition you want. Ultimate Edition is not an officially recognized Ubuntu system but that is what it is, Ubuntu with a whole lot of beautiful additions. But since you asked as a newby I would recommend Linux Mint

I thoroughly recommend Linux Mint 8 Main Edition which is built upon Ubuntu 9.10 Its easy to install and easy to use plus it comes with much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled

You download the ISO. image of Linux Mint 8 then you need to create a Bootable LiveCD for installation
Linux Mint 8 can also be run direct from the LiveCD from Booting up without touching your Hard Drive

If you want to learn linux, I suggest that you start with ubuntu and work your way up to Debian, Slackware, and others. I wouldn’t suggest Mint as a learning tool, it is better suited for people who don’t want to learn how to use the terminal and caters towards a windows-centric user (right click installation, avoidance of manual coding, etc.).
Also, I highly recommend that you buy a book. This is the way I learned linux years ago and I always recommend this to new users. It is a lot wiser to have a good reference than bumbling around message boards frustrated that you can’t install a program or figure out how to do something. I have used this book with new users at my previous linux users group and it really helps them get up to speed quickly.
