All I can say to that is this: Simply not true. FreeBSD isn’t just designed for server use only. Normal users can and do use freeBSD on laptops and desktops widely. Popularity for FreeBSD, yes will remain low compared to Linux, windows, or osx.
What’s the best OS for a server? Depends on what you want to do with the server. Don’t run Ubuntu (Worst Linux distro ever) on a server. Don’t put Window’s Server 2003 on an every day user computer.

freebsd is only for super users aka admin. normal users are not gonna use it in their production house, never. so that means freebsd popularity is and will still far below linux. don’t even compare it with osx and windows. anyway, i agree that freebsd is the best os … for server!

FreeBSD is awesome. – I’m using 6.3-RELEASE on another machine, and I have been able to maintain an uptime for over 200 days before I was forced to shutdown because of a dead HD.

Love FreeBSD. Doesn’t get near enough publicity. It’s proper UNIX, not that toy Linux.
